July 3rd, 2010

Rise of Internet and allied services: Internet was developed in the decade starting 1980 and a number of organizations contributed a lot in its development. The major contributors include the United States Department of Defense which had started a network named ARPANET for its internal uses in the late 1960s. After that, there were a number of combinations by various organizations and individuals. With the help of British scientist Tim Burns-Lee, premier European atomic research organization named CERN developed Internet and is credited with development of modern day Internet.

Web Hosting

Various forms of businesses have emerged since the introduction of internet. Internet marketing, development of websites and Social media networking are some of the offshoots of the internet. All these services have been used very effectively by numerous companies who have earned large revenues with the help of internet based services and various companies like Google, Facebook, Yahoo etc have internet based products. Google has revenues in excess of $23 Billion annually and Facebook has around $1 billion global revenues.

Users can make their own websites on the internet using web hosting. There are lots of service providers across the world, which provide such services. Such companies own servers which can be leased out to the website owners to host their websites. A server is a computer combined with related software which has a huge space available which can be used by the owner to provide various services to its clients.     Further, various technologies are used in web hosting. These include PHP and HTML etc. There are some proprietary softwares such as ASP.net, SQL etc which are owned by Microsoft technologies.

While technologies like HTML, PHP and some database servers can be used without any cost. Most of the times, you would need to spend some amount in order to get a website of your own. However, there are some websites which may provide you such services without any cost. In such cases, you would not get complete web address of your choice and there would be a lot of advertisements along with the web page that you obtain. Such services are available in a wide range of prices. This generally depends upon the additional services which are provided along with the hosting services.

Such websites make use of web servers which are used to provide storage space and other services. The user may get a complete server on lease or may need to share it with several other users. This depends on the type of plan being purchased by the user. By making use of certain plans, you can sell such services by your self and you become a service provider on your own.

These plans are called reseller plans and need to be purchased at a much higher price than other plans. Retail consumers and new start ups generally go for shared hosting plans which might be available within their budget. There are many websites which provide reviews about the service providers and any one going to buy any such plan should refer to such websites beforehand.

Free Web Hosting

Many web hosting plans are available which offer us a variety of features at a wide range of prices. There are web hosting plans for dedicated hosting, reseller hosting, VPN or free hosting plans. Each of them has its own advantages or disadvantages. High costs involved in most of such hosting plans become a deterrent for most of the new comers. Thus to help such individuals who cannot afford spending on a domain name tend to go for free hosting plans. Although such plans can serve their purpose in case of individual use, they are not advised for commercial purposes.

For example, Google has launched a similar service named Google Sites. Using this service, existing users of Google can get a website of their own. The name of such websites is in the form sites.google.com/user_name. This can be used only for personal purposes and the users can choose from a set of available templates and features. The users can not add effects of their choice and cannot take part in various business activities using such website. Further, users can get such personal websites at Blogger.com or Wordpress.com which are popular blogging platforms.

However, due to a variety of reasons, it is always advised to go for a paid hosting. The most important reason behind that is you don’t get a completely unique name. Thus, your client or a prospective buyer would not get much impressed by that. Moreover, such plans are accompanied by lots of advertisements as these are sponsored plans. You might get put off by such website. You cannot take part in various business activities. For example Google requires you to have a unique website of your own in the form of xyz.com to take advantage of Google AdWords.

You cannot add various features of your choice in such websites. There are some limited options available regarding designing of such website. Moreover, you get a limited space and bandwidth in such case. There are chances that you would not get around the clock technical support. Even if such support is existent, the response time would be slow and you may need to wait for even hours to get your problem resolved. However, Google Sites has a vibrant forum with lots of active users to help you out. Moreover, the support generally turns up quite quickly.

Some scripts require an automated service known as cron jobs to run regularly. This is not supported by the free websites and these do not provide a database or script programming such as PHP. Further, these websites don’t have efficient security mechanism in place. Thus, such a site can become a hunting ground for viruses, Trojan Horses etc which may steal your personal information like credit card and bank account information.

Unsolicited mails known as spam are another major problem with such hosting plans. You email inbox tends to get flooded with such emails. These mails may even contain links to malicious content such as pornographic material and viruses which may hack your computer and cause loss of critical information such as passwords, credit card details etc.
